Insect pheromones are an emerging tool for monitoring, mass trapping and mating disruption among insect pests of crops. In particular, they offer good potential for use as safer technologies for preserving the biodiversity in agro-ecosystems as well as for ensuring pesticide residue free produce so to be safe for human consumption. In the context of emerging interest to promote export focus agriculture in the country.
While considerable research work on the use of pheromones in eco-friendly pest control has been undertaken in the last few decades in India, there is need to forge stronger research –industry cooperation to lead to commercial mass production so to be availed by a wide spectrum of needy end-users. In this context there are niche areas of R&D which require urgent attention including pheromone component blend ratios, cost –effective synthesis protocol development, trap design and release system refinements, trap deployment optimization. There is also need to create more conducive policy environment to encourage investment in commercial mass production of pheromone, as well as quality control to safeguard the trust among consumers.
Technical Sessions:
The topics of importance to research and development of pheromone technology will be dealt under the following technical sessions;
1. Chemistry of pheromones: Isolation, identification, synthesis
2. Products of pheromones: Formulation, Loading, Lure dispensers, Trap designs
3. Pheromones in pest monitoring for early warning, timing and decision of pest control actions.
4. Pheromones for area-wide pest suppression: mass trapping, mating disruption
5. Pheromones and IPM: case studies of pheromones use
and integration in crop eco-systems.
6. Pheromone popularization: Private-public partnerships, policy support
The sessions will have lead papers presented by invited experts, followed buy contributed papers; the sessions will discuss the state of knowledge/adoption and propose focused recommendations on way forward for future Research, Development and Public-private partnerships and Policy support towards giving an impetus to pheromone technology popularization and wide-scale adoption.
Time frame for submission and processing of papers for presentations:
Submission of abstracts of papers on or before 16th July, 2008.Full paper to be submitted by Email/CD by 16th August 2008. All correspondence to be directed to Dr.S.Sithanantham, Technical Coordinator (Email: sithanantham@yahoo.com); and copy to Dr.Narasimhan, (narasimhan_s@yahoo.com) for any needed liaison.

Hosts & Venue:
The Asthagiri Herbal Research Foundation, Chennai, has been among the pioneering R&D institutions involved in research and development of pheromone technology for eco-friendly control of agricultural insect pests in India for more than two decades now. It is with his background that the Foundation is proposing to convene a National seminar.
The South Asia Society for Advancement of Pheromone Technology(SASAPT) will be co-hosting this seminar .SASAPT has been founded in 2006 by a consortium of pheromone manufacturing/ distributing private entrepreneurs in South Asia, with the main objective of promoting the science and technology of pheromone and towards building about the ecological-cum-economical benefits of this technology among the end-users The seminar is to be held in Vel's College Auditorium , Pallavaram, Chennai during 25th -26th September,2008.
Support:
It is proposed to approach for funding support from DBT, besides also from DST and CSIR among other organizations for conducting this seminar and publishing the seminar proceedings.
Invitation to interested participants:
The Seminar Organizing Committee is pleased to invite interested scientists/entrepreneurs/development agencies/policy makers to participate in this seminar, so to strengthen inter-institutional and multi-disciplinary R&D programs, with focus on encouraging public- private partnerships culminating in commercialization and mass production of the pheromone technology products.
